Roughing It In Style

When most people think of a biker hitting the highway, they think of someone on the road, with nothing more than the clothes they are wearing, and maybe a swag or sleeping bag for comfort. I'm sorry, I did that on my "Extra Short Ride" and it wasn't much fun. Not this time though.

Now that I have my trailer, I'll still be roughing it, but with most of the comforts of home to make things a little easier. I've packed and re-packed my little 'Coot a few times since I picked her up, trying to work out what I need to take for a 2 week adventure. Because of the trailers low profile, and relatively small size, I've had to cut back on a few of the comforts I want to take (sorry, but the 40" plasma and full size fridge will have to stay home).

Size isn't necessarily an issue as the trailer has a rack on the lid to take additional equipment. The biggest issue is weight as I don't want to overload the trailer (or the bike for that matter) so I've had to ensure I have the right balance between what I want to take and what I need, especially when you are heading to an area where you have to be prepared for anything from blizzards to bush fires.

I won't know if I've taken the right stuff, but here's what I've managed to fit into my little 'Coot:

  • One 4 person tent

  • One 16' X 12' heavy duty tarp

  • Eight 6' tarp poles

  • Pegs and ropes for the tarp

  • Folding chair

  • Gas bottle, extension pole and light

  • Gas stove

  • Thermos

  • Coffee, coffee and more coffee

  • Assorted cups, plates, cooking gear and cutlery

  • A few days food

  • First Aid Kit

  • Puncture Repair Kit

  • Jack (for the trailer)

  • Folding card table

  • Air mattress and pump

  • Sleeping bag

  • Tyre pump

  • 2 torches

  • Bike covers

  • Wet and cold weather gear

  • GoPro, batteries and charger cable

  • Scalar Rider and charger

  • Laptop & charger

  • Phone charger cable

  • 20W solar panel

  • 20 litre Esky

  • 5 litre fuel container

  • 10 litre water container

  • 1 litre oil

  • 2 spark plugs and spanner

  • Toolkit

  • Gaffer and electrical tape

  • Assorted fuses

  • 1 metre of fence wire

  • 1 metre of electrical wire

  • 1 box glasses/visor wipes

  • Small bottle of scotch (can be used as an external or internal antiseptic)

  • Clothes

Hopefully this should be enough to cover all contingencies.

I guess I'll find out on my trip what I don't really need and what I should have taken.

See you on the road.
